The record
On July 6, 2026, Australia’s national science agency, CSIRO, described a trial asking whether carbon-isotope signals preserved in wool could reveal differences in methane emissions from sheep. The researchers did not find methane trapped in fleece. They examined differences in carbon-isotope ratios incorporated into the fiber as it grew.
CSIRO explains that when a sheep produces less methane, it retains relatively more of the lighter carbon isotopes. That shift may be preserved in growing wool. Instead of measuring a passing breath directly, the proposed method reads a chemical signal accumulated over the period represented by the fiber.
In 2024, researchers ran a 20-week controlled trial at the Chiswick Agricultural Research Station in New South Wales. Sheep received different methane-suppressing treatments. CSIRO reported that the isotope response appeared to follow the direction the researchers had calculated.
The initial samples were promising enough to support a patent process for a concept the team calls BELCH4. CSIRO also raised the possibility that related isotope signals might be detectable in meat and milk. Those extensions remain questions for further testing, not established products.
This is not a commercial certification system or a finished meter for reconstructing an individual animal’s methane output. CSIRO is seeking external partners for larger trials. Its public account does not provide an error rate or sensitivity that applies across breeds, feeds, seasons and regions.
The turn
A breath disperses as soon as it leaves the body. Wool grows outward through the same stretch of time. Move the measurement from gas to fiber, and a passing observation becomes a sample in which an interval may have settled.
The fiber does not remember methane molecules. It may preserve a small change in how carbon was divided by the metabolism that made the methane. A record need not copy an event. It can be the balance the event altered as it passed.
If that difference can be read reliably, a low-carbon claim may eventually need more than an adjective in an advertisement. It may need a material trace that someone else can test later. The current research has not yet reached that standard.
Three possibilities
First possibility. Wool could become a long-duration sample grown by the body itself, reducing the need to keep expensive equipment beside every passing breath.
Second possibility. A claim about reduced emissions could be compared with a chemical signature traveling inside the product, allowing the evidence to move with the material.
Third possibility. A sheep releases a gas that changes the air while continuously growing a record linked to that gas in the opposite direction, out through its skin.

What the record cannot tell us
How reliably can a large field trial separate the methane-linked signal from other environmental variables? The public record does not settle the error range, the smallest detectable difference or the exact interval represented by a strand.
How much of the signal survives storage, washing and processing after shearing? Whether the same principle can be reproduced independently in milk and meat also remains outside the current record.
